Cold Brew Competition Details and Rules:

  1. Best House Cold Brew

Rules and Qualifications: This category is designed to find the best Cold Brew available at a café. Cafes will enter by their name must bring at least (1) gallon of cold brew for this entry from their cafes. On the honors system, this cold brew must be available on menu in their cafes that day for purchase. This is to exclude special “competition” brews. The goal of this competition is to highlight the best cold brew available to the consumer. If your café regularly features multiple cold brews (i.e. one “house” and one single-origin, etc.) you may choose from among these to represent you in the competition. It must be part of your standard menu on a regular basis, and not a special offering solely for this competition.

Cold Brew for this category is defined as coffee and water only combined in an immersion process for at least 6 hours. Excluded from “cold brew” by competition definitions are Kyoto drip style, flash-brews, or hot coffee brewed over ice. Various methods of blooming, filtering, diluting are all acceptable, so long as it meets the qualifications already laid forth.

Entries will be judged blind using a traditional cupping scoresheet.

Prize: Trophy signifying the best house cold brew in Los Angeles, as well as a cash prize of $250

  1. Best Signature Drink

Rules and Qualifications: This category is open to both cafes and individuals. Like the “sig bev” portion of the international Barista Competition, this category is intended to highlight the creativity and versatility of cold brew. For this category, “cold brew” is more loosely defined as at least coffee and water in an immersion process for at least six hours. However, any and all additional ingredients can be added before, during, or after the brewing process, so long as coffee and water are immersed cold for at least six hours at some point in the process. The portion of the beverage that constitutes “cold brew” must comprise at least 25% of the total beverage by volume.  Entry must be a drinkable beverage without the use of utensils.

Very limited space and time will be provided to do any final preparations of the beverage before judging. Beverages will be presented to the judges by the maker, and competitors are encouraged to describe to the judges the preparation and ingredients in one minute or less.

Neither the cold brew portion of the drink nor the drink itself has to come from your café menu, though companies who do have such drinks on their menu are highly encouraged to enter them. Ingredients must all be sourced in person in Los Angeles, though they do not need to have been produced, (or roasted,) there.

Entries will be scored based on taste, creativity, and presentation.

Prize: A cash prize of $150

  1. Best Home Brew

Rules and Qualifications: This category is open to any and all coffee aficionados connected or not connected to a coffee company. The prize and awards go to the individual, not the company they are (or are not) affiliated with. On the honors system, your cold brew must be made in your home using home coffee equipment (may not be ground on commercial grinders). You must bring in at least one quart (32oz) of cold brew to qualify. Your coffee can come from any roaster that you are able to purchase in person in Los Angeles. (The coffee does not have to be roasted in Los Angeles, but most be purchased from a café in Los Angeles.) You must bring the bag with you to the competition to give proper credit to the roaster.

Limited to 10 entries. Cold brew is defined as above.

Entries will be judged blind using a traditional cupping scoresheet.

Prize: Cash prize of $100
